Professional vs. Over-the-Counter Teeth Whitening

There is a wide a range of over the counter teeth whitening products available, but professional whitening systems are safer and more effective. Here, our Surrey dentists explain why.

Over the counter whitening treatments are simply not very effective. This is because these products only remove surface stains, which does not result in a significantly whiter smile.

Products like whitening strips, toothpastes and rinses also don’t whiten dental restorations like caps, bonds or veneers. Since they only whiten the natural teeth, you may end up with a splotchy looking smile if you have dental restorations.

Professional teeth whitening at your dentist’s office is much more controlled and can be done as part of a dental restoration plan, in conjunction with other restorative treatments. That means you whiten your teeth first, and then have the restorations completed to match the new, whiter colour, resulting in a more consistent smile.

Professional whitening products also produce better results than over the counter products do. This is because, in addition to removing stains, they also lighten the actual colour of your teeth.

Professional whitening products are more expensive than over the counter products, but the price difference is worth it for the superior results!
