Can Invisalign be used in conjunction with other treatments?

Can Invisalign be used in conjunction with other treatments?

If you've had prior dental work you may be wondering if you're still a good candidate for Invisalign clear aligners? Thankfully, in many situations, you can still be a candidate for Invisalign treatment. Today, our Surrey dentists explain.

If you have mild crowding, misalignment issues, or are just looking for a straighter smile, your dentist may recommend Invisalign clear aligners as an orthodontic treatment option to help you achieve your smile goals.

Invisalign is a popular choice amongst adults, many of whom may have had prior dental work done, including implants, veneers, or crowns. Here, our Surrey dentists discuss how prior dental work can impact the use of clear aligners as orthodontic treatment.

Invisalign After Veneers

Dental veneers are custom-made thin, tooth-coloured shells that are designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve their appearance. Even if you've had veneers put in, or are considering veneers, you can still be a candidate for Invisalign provided your teeth are healthy enough. This is because your Invisalign trays will fit over the veneers in the same way they would fit over a natural tooth.

Talk to your dentist about whether or not Invisalign is the right choice for your situation.

Invisalign After Crowns

If you have bridges or crowns, your dentist will do an assessment to determine if you are a suitable candidate for Invisalign. If your teeth are well rooted and the crowns are firmly attached and sealed, you may be able to straighten your smile with Invisalign.

If your dentist decides your teeth are suitable for Invisalign, your crowns should not get in the way of creating your Invisalign trays as they are custom-fit to each patient. Your dentist may take an extra step and create a clear attachment to protect the crown and ensure that it remains intact during your treatment.

Invisalign After Dental Implants

In most cases, you will be able to get Invisalign after dental implants. However, whenever possible it is recommended you go through the process of straightening your teeth before the dental implants are put into place.

A dental implant cannot be moved like a regular tooth because it is permanently fused to your jawbone. If you have dental implants and are considering Invisalign, your dentist will take this into consideration to determine if clear aligners are suitable for your situation.

If you have one or two dental implants, Invisalign treatment can usually be customized to move the teeth adjacent to the implant for a successful outcome. The more dental implants you have, the harder this process becomes.
